Another successful year for Curlew Country as Voneus powers global live stream of rare bird nesting
Three curlew chicks hatched live on Curlew Cam, streamed globally thanks to Voneus’ broadband—supporting conservation in the Shropshire Hills.
16th June 2025Curlew enthusiasts from around the world were once again tuning in to witness the magic of nature, thanks to a continued partnership between Curlew Country and rural broadband specialists, Voneus.
Over the weekend, three curlew chicks successfully hatched in the monitored nest, a highly anticipated moment captured live on Curlew Cam, that streams the nesting activity of these rare and elusive birds from the Shropshire Hills.
Now in its eighth season, the Curlew Cam is operated by conservation organisation Curlew Country, with support from Voneus, whose high-speed fibre and fixed wireless broadband enables the live feed to be broadcast seamlessly to a global audience.
Based along the Shropshire Hills and Powys borders, Curlew Country has been working tirelessly since 2015 alongside landowners, volunteers, and local communities to reverse the alarming decline of curlews in the region. When the first live camera launched in 2017, none of the 20 monitored nests produced fledged chicks. But through years of dedicated conservation work, an impressive 149 chicks have now been successfully returned to the wild through a technique called headstarting pioneered in the UK by Curlew Country.
The live-streamed nest has once again drawn viewers from across the world, highlighting the importance of conservation efforts and the role technology can play in education and awareness.
Voneus is proud to play a part in bringing this special moment to life. As experts in rural connectivity, Voneus delivers reliable broadband solutions across Shropshire, helping to connect even the most remote locations (and nests) to the digital world.
Amanda Perkins, who leads Curlew Country, shared her enthusiasm, “I’m absolutely thrilled and incredibly grateful that Voneus has once again chosen to support our Curlew Cam by providing the reliable broadband connectivity that combined with the diligent support of Carnyx Wild makes this live stream possible. It allows us to monitor these remarkable birds closely and educate people across the world on just how vital our conservation efforts are in preserving not only the species, but also the iconic sound of curlews, from extinction.”
“Curlew Country has been delivering hands-on conservation for this red-listed species for many years, and we now contribute at a national level in both England and Wales through our work with the Curlew Recovery Group and Gylfinir Cymru steering groups.”
“The Curlew Cam is an essential tool, not just for monitoring, but for sharing knowledge about curlew behaviour and habitat needs. It also plays a crucial role in engaging the public and acting as a flagship initiative for the species and the beautiful landscape they inhabit.”
